It is a comforting story. It is also completely detached from physical reality.

When people tell you China is achieving an unassailable great leap forward in food production, they are confusing state announcements with soil chemistry, water physics, and thermodynamics.
Beijing is not conquering food scarcity. It is hiding structural deficits behind massive carbon footprints and precarious import dependencies.
The Arithmetic of Exhaustion

If domestic production were making such a miraculous leap forward, China's import balance sheet would reflect a self-sufficient powerhouse. Look at the raw trade data instead of the state media op-eds.
China remains the world's largest importer of agricultural commodities. Soybeans, corn, and meat pour across its borders in record quantities every single year. The country has effectively outsourced its ecological footprint to Brazil, the United States, and Argentina. It clears forests in South America to feed pigs in Sichuan.
Call that what you want, but do not call it food independence.
The strategy is simple: use foreign soil and foreign water to buffer domestic political stability. But that buffer depends entirely on open sea lanes, stable geopolitical relations, and surplus global grain markets. The moment one of those variables shifts, the entire architecture of domestic security wobbles.
The High-Tech Trap
Let us address the vertical farming and smart agriculture fetish. Venture capitalists and technocrats love to point to massive indoor facilities in Tier-1 Chinese cities as proof of a new agricultural paradigm.
Here is what they will not tell you about those facilities: the energy costs are staggering.
Agriculture is, at its core, a giant solar energy conversion process. Plants want free photons from the sun. When you build massive indoor LED-lit warehouses to bypass weather and soil, you are essentially trying to run a photosynthesis factory on coal-fired electricity. The thermodynamic inefficiency is breathtaking.
I've watched companies try to scale these operations until utility bills crushed their margins into dust. In China, where the power grid still relies heavily on coal, every head of lettuce grown in an urban vertical farm is essentially a carbon liability disguised as food security. It works as an elite showcase project. It fails utterly as a macro-economic solution for a nation of 1.4 billion people.
Redefining the Real Metric

The question itself is flawed because it assumes a binary state of survival. The real question is: at what nutritional and economic cost does domestic self-sufficiency happen?
If Beijing tries to force complete self-reliance, the caloric intake of the average citizen drops, the cost of protein skyrockets, and arable land degrades even faster under intense over-cultivation. The state knows this. That is why they keep buying agricultural land abroad, locking down port infrastructure from Piraeus to Long Beach, and hoarding global grain reserves. They are hedging against their own internal limits.
Stop looking at the glossy brochures of automated greenhouses. Look at the water tables, the import ledgers, and the energy grids. The next food crisis will not come from a sudden lack of technology. It will come from the hard, unforgiving math of finite resources meeting infinite political ambition.
