  • Embrace planned retreat. There are certain valleys and ridgelines where humans simply should not live. When a neighborhood burns to the foundation, the smartest economic and humanitarian move is often to buy out the land, turn it into open space or a natural firebreak, and help residents relocate to core urban areas where infrastructure is defensible.

We have the technology. We have the data. We have the historical precedent.

What we lack is the spine to tell people that they cannot build whatever they want, wherever they want, and expect the rest of the country to bail them out when the inevitable happens.

Stop treating natural cycles as personal attacks. Fix the codes, fix the zoning, or get out of the woods.
